Nourishment Before the first bite

Before the first bite

Share

Most meals begin with a fork, not the hand. We barely meet the food before it's gone.

In many traditions, food is touched, smelled, and taken in with the senses before eating, sometimes eaten with the hands. Some people find that meeting a meal this way, slowly, makes it taste more and satisfy sooner.

When did you last really feel your food?

What you'll need

  • A meal you can take slowly
  • Clean hands, willing to touch the food

Method

Before you eat, take a moment with the food, its warmth or coolness, its smell, its texture, even with your hands.

Then eat the first few bites slowly, tasting fully, before the pace picks up.

Try it over a week of meals, and notice whether meeting your food first changes how it tastes, or how much you want.
