Around After the rain

After the rain

Share

There's a particular smell after rain. Earthy, clean, hard to name.

It has a name: petrichor, the scent that rises when rain meets dry ground. People have noticed it for as long as there's been rain and earth to catch it. Some find a few minutes outside just after a shower settles something in them.

What does it do for you?

What you'll need

  • A window or a doorway, once the rain eases
  • Nowhere to be for a few minutes

Method

The next few times it rains, step outside or to an open window just as it's easing.

Breathe the air in. Notice the smell, the temperature, how the light has changed.

Over a few weeks of catching it when you can, notice whether the after-rain air does anything for you — and whether it's the same each time, or different.
