The pause after the breath
Each breath has a small gap at the end of the out-breath, before the next one comes. We rarely notice it.
In yoga, that pause is given attention of its own, a moment of natural stillness in the body. Some people find that resting there, lightly, settles the mind.
How long is yours, before the next breath?
What you'll need
- A quiet minute, sitting comfortably
- Your own breath, left as it is
Method
Let your breath come and go on its own, without changing it.
Notice the small still gap at the end of each exhale, before the in-breath begins, and rest your attention there.
Come back to it for a few minutes a day for a week, and notice the pause, whether it lengthens on its own, and how it leaves you.
